President Of Ecuador
Sonnenholzner stated in a video message that “a shootout followed a police chase a few meters from where we were a few minutes after we arrived at the restaurant.” He claimed no harm had been done to him or his family.
The murder of another presidential contender, Fernando Villavicencio, who was running against gang violence and corruption, stunned the globe just a few days before to the shooting.
With regard to the most recent shooting, Sonnenholzner commented, “This is just another illustration of the daily struggles Ecuadorians face.”
We are all healthy, thank God, but we want to know what occurred.
Videos show Sonnenholzner and his family members exiting the building while wearing bulletproof vests.
The fear and powerlessness I witnessed in everyone there makes me sick to my stomach. We cannot continue in this manner, Sonnenholzner stated.
After an assault at a sports store in Guayaquil city, the Ecuador National Police later announced that five persons had been apprehended. Police reported that two weapons, athletic wear, and money were seized at the scene.
The gunshot, according to the police, had nothing to do with the election and was not intended for Sonnenholzner and his family.
In a statement, it was stated that “The National Police ratifies its commitment to combat crime, with the firm purpose of safeguarding the safety of all Ecuadorians.”
In recent years, Ecuador has experienced a catastrophic uptick in violence. Especially along its Pacific coast as criminal organizations fight for possession and distribution of drugs, notably cocaine.
