Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers help in all aspects of the organizaion. We need volunteers to provide support and advocacy on the phones, in the courts, and at social service agencies. They can facilitate support groups and work with families in the shelter. Help is also needed with office projects, shelter maintenance, and community outreach.

A Safe Place holds a one hour volunteer orientation for anyone interested in volunteering and wishing to gain more information. These sessions are held the third Tuesday of each month at 6:00 PM in our Portsmouth Office. We ask that you RSVP if you are planning to attend. To RSVP or for directions please call the office at 603.436.4619.

Training sessions for volunteers are held at least twice each year. They consist of 30 hours of interactive educational training, and a minimum of 16 hours of supervised on-the-job training. If you are interested in direct service opportunities at A Safe Place you are required to attend the training sessions.

After your training you may choose your area of interest and the schedule that best suits you. Volunteers commit to different amounts of time for different periods; most work an average of four hours a week. Volunteer meetings and inservice trainings are held periodically and all volunteers are strongly encouraged to attend.

We also accept a limited number of university internships each semester/year. If you are looking for an internship experience please give us a call. At this time we are not able to offer a liscensed mental health therapist for supervision.

Because our training process is lengthy and requires a high level of time and energy, we ask that you think seriously about your volunteer commitment. We recommend that volunteers commit to at least six months following training.

For more information, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at 436-4619, ext 14.
